December Birthstone Tanzanite, Zircon and Turquoise – there are three. We’ll only be looking at one of these blue birthstones for December, namely the Tanzanite.
Tanzanite comes in various shades of blue and is named after the only country where Tanzanite is found, namely Tanzania. This beautiful gemstone is therefore very rare yet still remains relatively affordable.
The Tanzanite is a very young gemstone, and especially young to already have been included as a birthstone. Most gems have a history going back thousands of years, but Tanzanite was first discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian government nationalised the mines and had a wall built around the mining area to stop the smuggling of this very rare and beautiful gemstone.
Even though Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, it remains cheaper than the similarly coloured Sapphire.
Queen of Kilimanjaro Tiara
This magnificent piece of jewellery is fit for royalty and features one of the largest tanzanites ever found, weighing in at 242 carats. The tiara has been carefully crafted to resemble a hooded King Cobra.
Petersen Tanzanite Brooch
This exquisite floral platinum brooch has almost 24 carats of marquise, pear and baguette cut diamonds. This clever design allows one to detach the two Tanzanite flowers that can then be worn as earrings.
Chopard’s “Belle” Necklace
This masterpiece collar-necklace features a 69-Carat Tanzanite Center surrounded by various shades of beautiful blue and pink sapphires and was inspired by Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”.
Tanzanite is only mined in one country, Tanzania.
This amazing gemstone has a transparent blue colouring ranging from blue to violet or even a violet-blue colour with red sometimes visible depending on the lighting and angle of viewing. Similar to some other gemstones, when heating Tanzanite it is possible to clear up the colour or change a darker blue colour to a more marketable shade of blue. Tanzanite is very pleochroic which means that it appears to change from an intense blue, to violet, or even red depending on lighting and the direction of viewing.

Our most important advice is, to keep your Tanzanite away from direct heat and sunlight as these gemstones’ colour changes when treated with heat, and the obvious to prevent any dropping or sharp knocks of any piece of jewellery.
Custom Designed Tanzanite Jewellery should only be put on after applying your makeup to help keep the shine and colour of your jewellery piece.
Please consult us at Francois Jewellers before using any mechanical or chemical cleaners also for care instructions.
You are also welcome to drop off your Tanzanite Jewellery to be cleaned and polished before your next big event.
